When I first started writing this newsletter—more than two years and 345 posts ago—I called it Never Retire.
As things evolved and my plans to move to Spain solidified, I changed the name to Never Retire: Living The Semi-Retired Life.
Over most of the last year, I pretty much stripped away the Never Retire part, leaving only Living The Semi-Retired Life.
As I’ll explain today, that was a mistake.
What’s in a name? A lot more than arguing semantics. There’s a relationship between the two names—which is why I’m starting to use both again—that matters not only to your money, but your entire mindset around life. Even if you are retired or will traditionally retire—as is the case for more than a few of our paid subscribers—these words matter.
I got to thinking about this as my partner and I looked ahead to 2024 and 2025.
2024 will be the year to travel for a month (February, to Spain and France), then focus on gathering documents, meeting Spain’s Digital Nomad visa requirements, closing up shop in the United States and getting ready to set sail for Valencia.
2025 will be the beginning of the second act of our lives. Because so much of what we experience—logistically, bureaucratically, culturally and in the day to day—will be new, the things I write in this newsletter—even more than they already are—will be an instant and near-daily look into my life—on the ground in Spain—as it unfolds.
All of this alongside personal financial thoughts and ideas that go against convention. The quantitative and qualitative approaches we take to money and life in this newsletter take something that can carry negative connotations—Never Retiring—and make it not only positive, but more appealing than the traditional norm.
Living The Semi-Retired Life.
Call this a manifesto!
