Not All Of Affordable America Stinks!
Running more math on a semi-retired life in the United States
I find myself in the odd position of defending the United States, a country that—frankly—I can’t wait to leave. There’s no place in this country I see myself living after next year.
Even if money was no object, I’m moving to Spain. My partner and I are going for the lifestyle, culture and society first. Less expensive housing, the ability to eventually buy an apartment and overall lower cost of living second. All things that—taken together—we cannot get in America.
This said—I don’t hate this country. There are parts of it I really dislike and can no longer tolerate. However, I’d be born on third base thinking I hit a triple if I didn’t acknowledge that America—particularly California—helped put me in the favorable position I’m in today. To be able to do the work I do and use it—if all goes as planned—to secure a visa to move abroad. The last thing I’ll do is completely shit on the United States on the way out.
But, there’s no way you’ll catch me living in any of the places I mentioned earlier this week—
Indeed, some of these places are unfit for living. And, in many cases, you’re not going to find an area you can consider livable unless you head into more affluent parts of town. However, this absolutely isn’t the case across the board.
While I hope nobody felt as if I’d ever endorse Flint, Michigan as a great place to Live The Semi-Retired Life, there are more than a few below the median places in this country where you can live and—if the size, scope and setting suits you—live well.
In today’s info-packed installment, I detail what I mean, once again running numbers on how you can secure affordable housing and carve out a nice semi-retired life in the United States. These examples are not for everybody—including me—but that doesn’t mean it’s not possible and desirable for more than a few readers. They’re also not perfect or meant to be right up your alley. They’re meant to get the wheels turning if you’re considering change or otherwise assessing your present and future.
If any of this sets anybody on a righteous path, we’ve done our job. Of course, everything I offer is little more than a surface scratch ahead of you doing your own, in-depth, personalized research and analysis.
Remember … if you’re like a lot of people, you might have a few bucks saved, but not near enough to fully retire. Regardless of your cash position, you might have home equity. This is where making some bold moves on housing can set you up—and apart.
