You are a free subscriber to the Living The Semi-Retired Life newsletter. At some point, you made the choice to click subscribe and take the first step toward joining our community. And I appreciate it.
The update: I have decided to make Living The Semi-Retired Life a newsletter exclusively for paid subscribers. As a free subscriber, you will still receive occasional preview posts, however I will no longer send free posts.
My rationale: I believe writers should get paid for their writing. I work hard producing this newsletter as a blend of useful personal financial thoughts, ideas and strategies and a peek into my semi-retired journey through life, which includes travel and plans to move to Spain sooner rather than later. The money content directly relates to my life experience—past, present and anticipated future. So it’s real—often raw—and, I hope, somehow relatable and adaptable to your situation.
As a freelance writer for the better part of the last 15 years, I presently have four sources of income:
This newsletter
Medium
A Monday-Thursday personal finance and investing newsletter for a private client
Personal finance articles for a large media organization via a partnership that has yet to be announced
I love and am thankful for all of my work, but, from a personal standpoint, I get the most out of publishing this newsletter. I hope it can one day become my largest and sole source of income. I just turned 48 and plan on writing Living The Semi-Retired Life until the day I die. So you’ve got—at least—another 52 years worth of emails left!
If all goes well, soon you’ll start hearing about the visa application process and the actual move to Spain. If all doesn’t go well, you’ll hear about that too. But I hope—and plan—to be writing these posts from a terrace in Spain within the next two years.
In the current iteration of the internet—and my newsletter—there’s not a ton of value in being a free subscriber. You get the most bang for your time—and buck—if you upgrade. This means you’ll receive access to my 250-plus post archive, guest posts (which I hope to do more of) and every story I write, from the personal finance content to tracing the journey me and my partner are on to travel stories full of tips, cost of living comparisons and lots of city and food/drink photography.
I put a ton of time, effort and thought into what I do. And I can’t overstate how amazed I am to see a community of diverse individuals from all over the world forming around our core themes, which include the reality that you might Never Retire, Living The Semi-Retired Life, maintaining a low cost of living, our housing situations and, directly related to housing, moving abroad. I learn from members of this community every single day through their engagement with this newsletter as well as their own work. So I don’t take any of this lightly, including the decision to make my newsletter a paid-subscriber newsletter.
Here’s a sampling of some of my recent newsletter posts:
If you can’t afford a subscription, please reply to this email and we’ll work something out. Most likely a one-month trial so you can get a better survey of the landscape.
If you choose to unsubscribe, I understand that too.
However, if you’d like to upgrade, now is a great time, as I will raise prices at the end of the year. Existing subscribers will be locked into the current 2023 prices.
